Your Path to a Full G Licence
Ontario uses a graduated licensing system. Here is exactly how it works, step by step.
G1 Written Test
Pass the MTO's knowledge test covering essential road rules and traffic signs. No actual driving is required, so simply study the official driver's handbook thoroughly.
1–2 weeks prepG1 Driving Practice
Build foundational driving skills with a certified instructor. Complete your BDE course requirements and log a minimum of 12 months of active driving experience.
8–12 monthsG2 Road Test
Take your official G1 exit road test. This covers local streets, residential driving, and core manoeuvres. Pass this evaluation successfully to earn your G2.
~30 min testG2 Advanced Practice
Refine advanced techniques like highway driving, hazard perception, and defensive maneuvers. You must maintain this status for at least 12 months of experience.
12 months min.Full G Licence
Pass the final G2 exit test, demonstrating flawless highway driving and advanced skills. You now officially hold Ontario's fully unrestricted driver's licence.
