Your Car is Part of Your Safety System
Many road test cancellations happen because a student's vehicle has a burned-out tail light, cracked windshield, or low tire pressure. Beyond tests, mechanical neglect causes real accidents. These foundational checks take under five minutes and should become part of every driver's routine.
Essential Pre-Drive Checks
Lights & Signals
Before driving, visually confirm all headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights are functioning. A failed bulb is not just a legal violation — it makes your intentions invisible to other drivers.
Tire Pressure & Tread
Check tire pressure monthly and before long trips using a pressure gauge. Under-inflated tires reduce fuel economy, increase stopping distance, and can cause blowouts. Tread depth below 2/32" is illegal in Ontario.
Fluid Levels
Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid regularly. Low brake fluid or coolant can cause sudden mechanical failure with no warning — especially in stop-and-go city traffic.
Dashboard Warning Lights
Never ignore a warning light. DriveTest examiners will cancel your road test if any warning light (engine, ABS, or traction control) is illuminated. Address them before your test and before they escalate into costly repairs.
